Online Community Wishes

I desperately want more engagement with the online art & web scene. Like the thought of collaborating with other artists makes me giddy, tbh. I want a world where someone online not only reads the silly little opinions I have but comments on them, shares their thoughts & critiques, and I regularly go check out their website and do the same. (If you want that, PLEASE REACH OUT TO ME VIA emailme@deathsurplus.com)

I bring this up because of the newish social media platform Perfectly Imperfect (pi.fyi). Geared as a free, old-web style social hub that isn't harmful like other forms of social media, I gave it a try.

I see a lot of posts on there saying that posting on PI feels so much less like screaming into a void than other platforms, it feels like people actually see and hear what you have to say, aaaaand I wish it felt that way to me, too . It still feels so hard to actually have a DISCUSSION. At least on mobile, the layout of the app is not set up to have any sort of back-and-forth, let alone a back-and-forth discussion where another user can weigh in. I actually sent Tyler an email about it, haha.

For a LOOONG time I've had this idea for a "social media" platform that I really, really want to exist: a feed of posts from no more than 25 people at a time. As in: you make a little community and can add up to 25 people in it, who can post whatever form of media they want, and it appears as the traditional waterfall feed. I WISH there was a way I could view just a stream of my friends' art, little write-ups, blog posts, videos they like, music they're listening to, etc. etc.!

I really don't think I'll ever have more than MAYBE 50 people who I give enough of a damn about to want to see every single one of their posts. I think there is certainly a time and place for viewing content from every corner of the internet, especially art, but I honestly don't think seeing posts of the lives of every last person I've ever briefly known is good for me. I don't want to hear about the workout routine or diet of anyone except for people who I trust have their best wishes for me at heart. I don't want my good friends' content to be buried underneath the post of a meme account or a random suggested post.

I'm looking for two things:
1. A "social media" where I'm not on it to discover new people and make new connections, but rather strengthen my current connections with people who I might not catch up with all that often
2. A broader-reaching community online that fosters discussion and engagement with one another's art and thoughts and lives!! I WANT to care about more people. I WANT a good-faith community that is as large as possible. I WANT to know more people more personally and care about one another. (Please for the love of god I want to be part of a webring please please please) I DON'T WANT to see more people's content without the intention to further engage with each other, MUTUALLY. I don't want to see content from people I don't know endlessly (small doses is fine) unless it's the start of a new, mutual relationship. I want to TALK to more people, not LOOK at more people.
